Pioneering the future of energy and the environment with carbon materials
Our laboratory is working to solve energy and environmental issues using carbon materials.
While valuing "harmony with nature," we are developing new functional materials from the basics to applications, using flexible, creative ideas and cutting-edge technology.
Fundamental and fundamental research on highly functional and high performance carbon materials
Our laboratory is working on a wide range of topics, from classic carbon to cutting-edge functional carbon materials. With a history spanning approximately 60 years, we are not only developing high-performance carbon materials, but also tackling the fundamentals and principles of these materials. Specifically, we are working on the development of carbon fibers, activated carbon, coke, battery electrodes, graphite electrode materials, pitch materials, and more.

Realization of carbon nanohybrid materials
Our laboratory is also working on the development of nanoscale carbon materials. Specifically, we are creating materials by designing them from the nanoscale, such as carbon nanofibers, carbon nanoparticles, and carbon materials with ideal structures.
Advanced use of fossil resources as energy and environmental materials
Our laboratory is also working on carbon resource chemistry. For example, we are evaluating the physical properties of fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal, and developing methods for modifying them. We also evaluate the physical properties of carbon resources in a broad sense, such as terrestrial biomass, marine biomass, high-plastics, and industrial waste, and develop carbon materials using them.

Search for new materials and new properties
In our laboratory, we are developing new materials using carbon as a resource. The carbon resources that our laboratory targets are highly multi-component and contain many complex mixtures of substances. By targeting such carbon resources and creating materials from these complex mixtures, we are exploring the development of new materials and the expression of new functions.
